Landfill Site Remediation

Several decades upon closing municipal landfills, explosive and partially toxic gases are produced, along with odours and leachate laden with noxious organic compounds. This is due to prolonged anaerobic microbial decomposition of organic waste, resulting in adverse impacts on the environment. The main product of anaerobic digestion is methane. It is explosive and also contributes to the greenhouse effect. In contrast, aerobic microbial processes progress much faster, are more acceptable for the environment, since only climate neutral carbon dioxide, water and released heat are produced. To generate aerobic conditions in the landfill, artificially supplied air is needed. Here it is important that we ensure even distribution of air throughout the landfill. The use of the patented Biopuster ® technology allows a complete and monitored conversion of an anaerobic state to an aerobic one, which enables:

  • acceleration of the entire and complete decomposition of biodegradable organic waste in in-situ landfills, without reloading the waste
  • implementation of maintenance work in the landfill when waste movement is required
  • obtaining new landfill capacities of the existing landfills by removal and treatment of the excavated waste
  • complete elimination of the closed landfill because of the adverse environmental impact
  • mechanical-biological treatment of municipal waste
  • remediation of land, contaminated with organic contaminants (e.g. the petrol stations)

The above presented approaches for landfill remuneration contribute to a substantial reduction of adverse environmental impacts and allow obtaining new landfill capacities in the existing landfill sites. Simultaneously, the treated excavated waste represents an energy source, which means we can expect the existing landfills to become energy »mines« of the future.
